Shane posted a few pictures Friday night of our Bat Walk with the boys; I wanted to follow up and explain it a bit more and share this video because it was such a cool experience. Three River's Park District Full Moon Program offers a series of walks that loosely follow a book titled "Walk When the Moon is Full". The book describes the author's nighttime walks with her children during each of a year's thirteen full moons. Through these chapters the reader experiences the thrill and awe of moonlit discoveries.
While we have yet to read the book, Friday night we took the boys to their first Full Moon Walk which happened to be the Bat Walk. It was held at The Landing in Shakopee and was lead by their naturalist, Megan. We were one of two families participating. The walk started at 8:30 (which is a super big deal since the boys are usually in bed by 8:00). Megan lead us through the Landing Park, past old building, gardens and chickens, to one particular building that was known to have many bats. Megan taught the boys how to use special radios she had that dialed into different frequencies allowing them to hear the bats communicating with one another with different clicking sounds. They also got a sheet that helped them determine what type of bats they were hearing according to the frequency they were on, and the type of clicking they heard. Within minutes of arriving at the bat building, and getting our radio lesson, bats started flying out of the roof! It was SO amazing and SO much fun! Here is a video of Ky with his radio; you can hear the bats and see the excitement!
Belowis a link to the Full Moon Program. We hope to be able to attend more walks and try some on our own once we have read the book!
